In the Aberdeen and Hoquiam area of Grays Harbor there is a group of people who everyone has seen but they are often overlooked. For 17 years they helped support the largest single day food drive in the world. Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, Campbell’s Soup Company and the USPS the local carriers and clerks collect tens of thousands of pounds of food for the local Aberdeen and Hoquiam food banks. The City Letter Carriers are joined by the clerks who work in the Post Offices as well as other Contract Carriers and Rural Carriers for this event. Local youth volunteers (in Hoquiam it will be the Cub Scouts) and families of the postal workers all join in this worthwhile event.
Since 1992 the local Aberdeen and Hoquiam Post Offices along with other offices in the area have collected nearly 200,000 lbs of food for the local food banks at a very critical non holiday season period of the year. As the carriers deliver the mail for this day they collect cans and bags of non perishable food items. This food is transported back to the Post Office where it is weighed and recorded then all of the food is taken to the local food banks. There will also be dropping off points in the Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Humptulips, Pacific Beach, Moclips, and Tokeland Post Offices.
It is truly a fulfilling day for everyone involved. The employees and volunteers take great pride in the worthwhile services they are providing for their neighbors in the community. This event happens every May. This year it will be Saturday, May 9th.
The amount of donations from the residents of the Aberdeen and Hoquiam postal delivery area is always inspiring. The willingness to give and help out our neighbors is another reason this is a great place to live and be a part of this special community.
