It sort of snuck up on me this year, perhaps because the weather hasn’t been encouraging me to think of picnics ~ swimsuits ~ sunscreen and barbeques. The forecast is looking great for the weekend, and your Grays Harbor Public Market can help take the stress out of planning for a mini staycation.
Okay, first you need someplace to sit and achieve that zen-like state of total relaxation. We just happen to have the world’s finest Humptulips Cedar Adirondack funriture. Simply looking at one of these exquisite chairs causes waves of calm to envelope your being. An adult beverage of your choice may enhance this tranquil state. So, picture yourself in this semi-recumbant pose—–do you want to spoil it by spending time inside cooking?? well of course you don’t!!! What you want is to fire up the barbeque, toss some of Anthony’s incomparable sausages onto grill. Now, some people still buy those squishy white bread buns, the ones which require a real stretch of imagination to attribute any sort of flavor or texture. I recommend skipping the 0-vitamin squishy bun and slicing instead a loaf of Nancy’s finest bread. It comes out of the oven early Friday morning, and will change your attitude about those silly buns.
Having fortified yourself with protein and unbleached real flour bread, it’s time to think about the side dishes. Well, how easy is slicing into a perfectly ripe tomato and a crisp onion before tossing together that potato salad? My mother made the very best ever, and her secret (via the Joy of Cooking) was a scant 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Trust me on this. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you need to make the potato salad way ahead of time and chill it. The flavor of a slightly warm potato salad is guaranteed to make you swoon. And be sure to add lots of hard boiled eggs. We have lots of fresh local eggs, so don’t skimp.
Speaking of eggs, don’t Deviled Eggs define a Memorial Day meal? Our friend Dinah Sue takes them to another level of gourmet delight with the simple addition of crumbled cooked bacon bits. Oh my gosh, the difference they make! Better buy another dozen eggs, these will dissappear within moments.
You are now thinking about dessert. Not that you need a heavy finish to the meal, but you want something to tickle the taste buds. Rhubarb is at it’s very best right now, and Nancy will be baking up Rhubarb pies in several combinations; Wednesday she starts with Rhubarb Strawberry combo and the ever delectable plain Rhubarb. On Friday her kitchen will be in high gear as she rolls out Peach Rhubarb, Raspberry Rhubarb, more Strawberry Rhubarb and lots of just Rhubarb for the purists. And because she is such a wonderful person, she will deduct $2.00 form the large pies and $1.00 from the small personal size pies if you remember to mention this article.
We still have several work days to get through before this sublime weekend, so Deidra is doing her best to make each day better by providing you with a scrumptious lunch. This week she is offering $1.00 off of Nancy’s Special sandwich. I could describe it to you, but I think that curiousity is a fine appetite enhancement.
Wishing you the very best and laziest summer weekend possible!
