A handsome asian inspired fence with ‘Tori (Japanese for bird perch) trellised every 8 feet and green coated see through fencing ’is the new backdrop for your Garden by the Sea – the Ocean Shores community garden. The fence was inspired by the ancient Japanese symbol of the Tori or bird perch. The idea was to frame the garden like a picture so that the fence would allow for visitors to ‘see through’ it. The concept was another idea lifted from the Japanese. They call the it, ‘borrowed view’.
The hardworking folks at the Garden by the Sea have already begun the process of transforming the site into a garden. While construction continues, the new raised beds are filling up fast. Russian sage, spiced lettuces and green leafy tomatoe plants are popping up everywhere. Little pieces of garden art, family names inscribed on driftwood and a beach inspired Garden by the Sea welcome sign are but a few of the items that let you know that progress is really happening here.
Last week a team of dedicated volunteers spent several hours mulling over the details of getting water into the garden. It seems like preparation makes its own luck as the early design committee had worked tirelessly to produce an idea to follow. In the end, overalls were soiled and that sticky cement that holds the PVC pipes together covered fingers like’ new skin’ but the irrigation system was completed!
In the end the garden will be enhanced by an herb labyrinth designed by a local artist with custom pavers, meeting and learning areas, a tool shed, compost bins donated by the Master Gardeners and it will also be graced with a winding path that leads to a pergola. But in watching the transformation of this new community space, the magic comes from the people working together, laughing together and yes loving each other and it is not missed. In your backyard exist a budding paradise where you can plant a tree, some flowers, or a lifetime of relationships.
