It was an unusual sight at the annual Relay for Life event in Hoquiam. One by one, three members of the PUD’s Information Technology staff sat in a makeshift barber’s chair. As a crowd looked on, Mike Dean, Rick Manwell and Corwin Grey received memorable haircuts. Scissors sliced through their long locks, which cascaded beyond their shoulders after two years without a haircut. Cheers erupted after each haircut, an acknowledgement by the crowd of the selfless dedication of the three IT staff members who endured two years of hair growth to achieve their goal of donating their hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long term hair loss from medical conditions or procedures, such as chemotherapy. The IT team’s extreme haircuts not only provided donations for Locks of Love, but also generated additional funds for the PUD’s Relay for Life Team. Almost $600 worth of raffle tickets was sold to win the right to snip off their long locks bringing the Kilowatt’s Kids total contribution to the American Cancer Society to more than $14,000.
The haircuts at the Relay for Life were just part of the dedicated effort by the PUD’s Relay for Life team to raise funds throughout the year. “We work with a great bunch of giving and supportive people,” said Teri Moody, who co-chaired the Kilowatt Kids campaign with Tara Ramos. “This has been a real District effort this year, and I am proud to work with such a great group of people,” she said. Tara expressed thanks to everyone who donated time and money. “I appreciate all the volunteers and donations we received throughout the year! We truly had a spectacular year, and I look forward to the years to come.”
Grays Harbor PUD “Kilowatt Kids” team members donate their time and energy to support the annual “Relay for Life” each year, raising thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society.
