The Lion’s Roar
By King Lion Wayne
Greetings to all of you in our Lions’ Kingdom. I want to thank all of you for your support in this first month of summer. We can look forward to some great things in this coming year.
Thank you JoAnn and Fred for your commitment and hard work in putting together the “Lions Go Green” project. It was a great idea to bring the community together to give emergency information to the public. The seed is sown and now we can grow from this next year. And the kids were included in the event, which is a great idea.
And a big Thank You to all who helped in the kitchen to make Fried Bread Tacos. It was a great first try in making them AND they tasted great. This idea was from Jeannie. The hot dogs and hamburgers surely came in second on sales. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the meetings during August and later.
August Calendar
August 6 Board Meeting, Pirates Cove 9:00am
August 13 Lions Meeting — Lions Building 12:00 — Program: Ocean Shores Fire Department outlining what they do in the community.
August 27 Lions Meeting — Lions Building 12:00
The Senior Resource Center is beginning to be noticed. We are having people coming to us with a wide variety of problems and concerns. We finished the “Living Healthy with Chronic Conditions” Class and got good reviews from the participants.
The Alzheimer’s Support Group will be commencing soon. Pastor Alice Hedges and Pat Engle will be the facilitators and coordinating the program. If you know someone who could use this service and would like to part of this group contact the center at 289-3352 and leave a message we will sign you up to be called when the group has their first meeting.
We have a wonderful handout for seniors, published by the Washington State Home Care Quality Authority, that desire to remain in their own homes as long as possible, entitled Stay Right Where You Are. If you are interested in a copy call the center or stop by on Tuesday or Thursday between 10am and 2pm.
Volunteers are needed at the center. Until our standing crew get home from vacation, heal etc. we are down to a skeleton crew. It is not a difficult job, but it is important to the seniors in our community. Please give some thought to putting in a 2 hour shift once in a while and call JoAnn at 289-4159.
Our table at the Lions Go Green Event was successful. We talked to many people. Several individuals had problems that they shared and are coming in to the center to get some information to help their situations.
We have been invited to present the Senior Resource Center concept at a United Methodist Conference on Aging in May. We presented the Center on local radio and have been given an open invitation to the Larry Phoenix Show with new developments.
May you always find shelter from any storm
CONFERENCES
The last Fall Forum (at least for the present) will be in Spokane October 23rd and 24th. Celebrate Marti Gras is the theme. Headquarters is Red Lion at the Park. Registration form is available from the secretary or the MD19 Website. More information on sessions and area events will be included in the July/August Border Crossing.
The format for conventions is changing. In 2010 there will be a Fall Annual Convention (no Fall Forum and no Annual Convention in May) and the usual District conventions in the Spring. This format will be used for five years and then evaluated.
The International Convention will be held in Seattle in 2011. Organizers are looking for many, many volunteers to assist with registration, greetings, room set-up and lots of other stuff. To become involved go to: http://www.lionsconvention2011.com
Three of our members attended District Governor Brien Patton’s first cabinet meeting on Saturday in Chehalis. DG Brien’s theme is “Yes We Can Serve – Balancing Family, Work and Service.” He will make his official visitation to Ocean Shores on October 5th. His Spring Conference will be in Kelso, March 12th and 13th. THINK ABOUT ATTENDING THIS ONE. New faces with the old would be great! Annual Convention (the last one, at least for the present) will be May 13th – 16th in Olympia.
Three of our members are serving DISTRICT G. Lion JoAnn Balmer is the secretary and PDG John Martin is Newsletter Editor for District G Governor Brien Patton; and Fred Balmer is the chauffeur (thank you Fred.)
LIONS GO GREEN
Hot Dogs! Hamburgers! Fried Bread Tacos!
The event was a good beginning of what could turn into something big. One of the positives were the children who were happy as they sat with their parents working on craft projects together. Each parent who brought in kids commented that this was the best thing that we have ever done. They hope that we will continue to have these family events in the future.
The Interpretive Center is hoping that we will make this family event a yearly adventure and they are interested in partnering with us in this endeavor next year.
The Lions Beach Express took 12 people down to pick up trash. The trash was sorted and will become an interesting mosaic to be entered in the Beachcombers Fun Fair in March. A big thanks goes to Ed and Pat Engel for pulling the trailer and furnishing the coffee for those in attendance.
Membership applications were handed out to people who were interested in joining the Lions Club. A big Thank You to Lions PDG Bill Ulmer, PDG John Martin and Arnold Samuels for talking to people and passing out literature from the Lion’s table.
A Look at Our History
Secretary Tom was busy cleaning out draws in the building and came across some pieces of history that will be turned into additional pages in the book. The following is an 1983 news release on the building construction:
Ground-breaking for the new OCEAN SHORES LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY CENTER was held on Thursday, April 14, 1983 at 8 am with the entire community of Ocean Shores invited. In 1977 the Ocean Shores Lions Club leased from the city of Ocean Shores a portion of Tract B. Division 1, for the Milo Schneider Lions Club Park. It covers two acres north of Galilean Chapel and adjacent to one of the water reservoirs in Ocean Shores.
The ground breaking ceremony was the initial step in a projected 60 x 80 foot community center which will have multi-functional usage. All organizations in the community have been invited to participate in the design projected usage, and government of the building. some of the dreams for using the building include a mee
